THE MAKEUP SHOW CONTEST - A photo celebration of the iconic fashion and beauty images to come out of LA.

Makeup artists, hair stylists and photographers are encouraged to submit their best work to The Makeup Show LA for Prizes and Recognition.

The Makeup Show Presents:

This Town is our Town – A photo celebration of the iconic fashion and beauty images to come out of LA.

Here is your opportunity to collaborate with your fellow artists, be a part of the Launch Event for The Makeup Show LA 2012, shoot at the famous Smashbox Studios and see your work published in On Makeup Magazine

ASSIGNMENT: Create an image that represents your team’s interpretation of this year’s theme “This Town is Our Town,” which will spotlight the beauty & fashion industry of LA and showcase the iconic looks that have come to us from Hollywood’s red carpet, silver screen, and fashion.

Rules for Submission:

To enter Submit your single image to info@themakeupshow.com by February 17th, 2012.

The JPEG may not be larger than 2 MB.

Please include credits and bios for each member of your team including photographer, makeup artist and hair stylist and credits for anyone else included in the shoot in the body of the email.

We will have our team of editors, photographers and producers select their favorite from the entries.

Finalists & Winners: Finalists will be contacted via email by February 24th, 2012. All finalists are responsible for mounting their own image and delivering to and from the event (California Market Center).

Print Dimension should be a minimum of 11” x 14.” All images from the finalists will be displayed at The Makeup Show launch event on March 16th and throughout The Makeup Show LA.

Entries will be judged by a panel of our top industry insiders and viewed by over 4000 industry artists and experts. The winner will be announced and featured on our blog following The Makeup Show LA

• Publication of an original beauty photo story in On Makeup Magazine’s Spring 2012 Issue and inclusion on the contributor page for photographer and make-up artist. Exhibit Patience Today

Whatever your challenge is today, the way out is not by complaining. Remember to praise Him in the midst of your trials, that you may be exalted in due time.

If you spend your day complaining about EVERYTHING, might not the answering of your prayers just give you one more thing to complain about?

Says Joyce Meyer in her book Battlefield of the Mind, “Patience is not your ability to wait, but your ability to keep a good attitude while you wait.” 

You may be placed in situations today that challenge you and stretch the limits of your patience. Your way out is not to complain or be haughty, stomp your feet or mumble under your breath, take someone to task at the bank, grocery store, or over the phone, or make those loud breathy sounds in a public place so that everyone knows you are upset. Quite the contrary, these situations are to be endured with grace, kindness and good temper. Thank Him now as you have been given an opportunity to grow and learn patience.

Makeup Artist Mixologist Ashunta Sheriff Appears in the CoverGirl LipPerfection Ads

Back in April 2011 I received the loveliest of Twitter connections from a makeup artist by the name of Ashunta Sheriff (@AshuntaSheriff). She told me of how the very FIRST Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide had helped her in establishing herself as a freelance makeup artist. I asked her if she would mind sharing with me 3 things she had learned from “the Guide.”  Here’s what she said:

"Wow!!!! Life is a constant circle and it never ceases to amaze me. Fourteen years ago I became a makeup artist and after one year of retail I knew that wasn't the life for me. I started networking and met a union makeup artist named Vincenza and she said, “You need to get Crystal Wright’s book.” It was the 1st edition which I still own to date. I read it, then hit the ground running. My favorite three things that I learned the most from The Hair and Makeup Styling Guide were:

1.  Invoicing

Until then I never knew how to structure an invoice or deal memo. It was your book that helped me with that process.

2. Artist’s Had Representation

I never knew agencies of this kind existed. After I read this I was given the tools to research various agencies and see what they offered, whom they represented and what the criteria was that I needed to secure an agent.

3.  Portfolios

I over heard a group of artist’s discussing ‘books’ and I assumed they were referring to magazine publications. After reading the Guide, I learned what a portfolio for a makeup artist was, where to purchase one, (which I've purchased 12 books to date), what tear sheets were, how to find work, how to stay on top of photographers and how to following up with editors for my tears.

Your book was a bible for the beginning of my career and I truly have always wanted to meet you. Miraculously through a new form of yet another form of marketing, TWITTER we have finally met (which "Marketing" is a great chapter in your book as well and my 4th biggest learning tool).

When you're in NYC and you have time I would love to meet you.

I hope everything on your end is amazing and if you need any speakers to inspire new artists I am your go to makeup artist.

I love teaching and sharing the knowledge with aspiring artists. I didn't have a lot of people reaching out to help me. There were very few. Fortunately I found your guide and everything began to change because I was armed with the knowledge to help me direct my career.

A FEW SPOIL IT FOR THE REST!

As most of you know, and for those who don't––last week I hosted a FREE conference call for artists who purchased a Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide during Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I even opened it up to anyone who purchased a book during the holiday and then extended it up until' the day of the call.

I thought it would be a good way to help artists who were reading "the Guide" to clear up any questions that they might have lingering.

Well, some of the invited guests gave away the FREE conference call number and pin code to folks who have NEVER even seen a Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide. It became so apparent by the questions I was being asked, that I finally just said, "Do you own "the Guide?" One person said, "Yes," but couldn't answer the simplest of questions and other said, "No," and I disconnected them from the call.

This I thought would be a good way of supporting those who are supporting me, and while I thought if it went well, I would do it for others, I simply cannot do that now.

I was asked on twitter, "Crystal, when is the next time you will be having another FREE call?" and I had to respond, "There won't be another one." :(.

Smart Business Lesson 101

If you are wondering what you should do with what you learn on today's FREE hour-long conference call? I have a suggestion: Use it to YOUR advantage. You bought the book! Many times you will hear me say, "What happens in this group, stays in this group," as it relates to my PYP Workshop attendees. That's not being stingy, that's being smart.

I think it sets a bad precident for artists who PAY for information in the form of books, classes, webinars, trade shows, tools and coaching to then turn around and give it to others who REFUSE to invest in themselves. In the Bible, that's called casting your pearls before swine.

Think twice before you give away your FREELANCE Advantage by sowing into folks who choose to invest their resources into things and activities that do not provide a return on their investment.
