Weekend Assignment: Engage | Discover | Contribute

Earlier this afternoon, I tweeted from In-and-Out Burger.

My inspiration came after I decided to park my car and walk into the In-and-Out Burger instead of going through the drive through. I walked inside and started doing what I always do, looking DOWN at my iPhone, when something said, "Put your iPhone down! Look Around, Notice the People, ENGAGE!"

I did just that. I looked around and started to look at folks. Connect! I smiled. They smiled back. I felt better. When I got in my car, I tweeted the following message:

A word 4everyone this weekend. ENGAGE!
Lets put down our cell phones droids & crackberries & pay
attn 2 the big & little people
who miss us.

Later I thought I could have said, young and old instead of big and little people because that's what I meant.

Our children and our elderly. Our parents & grandparents. That's what Thanksgiving and the holidays are all about. The joy of children and the connection to our families, friends, our history, our legacy, our relationships.

These 3 words come to mind: ENGAGE. DISCOVER. CONTRIBUTE.

Engage [with others]
    Be present, listen, connect

Discover [new things & new people]
    Be open, ask questions, explore

Contribute [to the conversation, the world]
    Respond, give thought to, sow into.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS | Be Careful Out There

It's quiet out here today in internet land, and that is as it should be. Lets relax. Have a glass of wine or a bottle of Champagne, chat with friends while cooking and just generally enjoy our loved ones.

Be careful out there. I paused this morning to pray the blood of Jesus around everyone in my territory––that's you, your friends and family members as they drive, ride and fly from one city to another, in and out of grocery stores and every other place they might go.

Be alert and aware of what goes on around you. Take care to put your groceries and gifts in the trunks of your cars and not on the seat. Help those who need it if you have anything to spare and worry not that they may be imposters. God will bless YOU anyway.

I'm off to drop off some packages at the post office and then to the grocery store to make my FAMOUS rum balls for tomorrow. I can't wait to see my cousin Nina and her kids. I love my family.

God bless all of my PYP students and Grads who are working so very hard. I love you. I support you and I'm here for you.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I am so very thankful for my life, my profession and my gifts.

Revelation

Sometimes God strengthens us in areas where we are weak by humbling us so we open our eyes and our hearts (minds) to what others have been going through at the hands of our insensitivity.

ESSENCE MAGAZINE FAMILY REUNION

Today I returned to the scene of the crime. Who knew that the house where Mikki Taylor's book signing was being held was the same house that Muhammed Ali owned and hosted a networking event on an August afternoon in 1985. It was there that I met celebrity and advertising photographer Bobby Holland. That afternoon would change my life and its direction forever. Four days later I met that photographer at his studio. Four days after that I quit my job at Xerox and the rest is history.

Being invited to Mikki's book signing was an honor. Returning to that house today and seeing so many of the people that I worked with on so many Essence Magazine covers and spreads brought many wonderful memories flooding back. The afternoon was full of history. So much of the old Essence crew to reconnect with. Today I learned that it was Special Projects Coordinator & More, Ms. Sandra Martin who discovered Mikki Taylor and brought her to Essence Magazine. Everything about this afternoon was perfect, including but not limited to the venue, the company, the food and the champagne––my personal favorite Piper Heidsieck.

"Commander In Chic" is a must-read. I tried flipping through a few pages in the car and couldn't put it down. It is a lovely, engaging, witty book full of unforgettable Mikkisms and tips on how to own your style. I'm going to start over with it tomorrow morning. Check out the link below and you can too!

Camera Ready

We often think of camera ready as what we have to do to our outward appearace to look good on the red carpet of our lives. But what would someone see if the camera was an x-ray of what's going on inside our minds and hearts. Addressing the inside by renewing your mind gives a whole new meaning to getting ready for your close up.
