Back in June 2009 I completed a book entitled 30 Days at 100 Percent: Changing Your Life 30 Days at a Time. It would effectively end the pity party I was having in the recession of 2008 and usher in a new season and purpose for my life.
To introduce the new book and the decision to conclude my season of representing freelance makeup, hair and fashion stylists, manicurists and photographers I emailed a letter.
Yesterday afternoon (Sun, Dec 26, 2010) I received an email from a former student named Stacey who remembered that letter and the impact that it had on her life. I responded right away and within minutes we were talking on the phone.
Stacey described how receiving my letter last year led her to read "The Purpose Driven® Life," as I had. She talked about how it got her moving in the right direction. She had intended to purchase, read, and implement "30 Days at 100 Percent: Changing Your Life 30 Days at a Time," but she stalled, didn't do it and as recounted to me, "That's why I'm so jacked Up Now!" We chuckled together, but it really isn't funny--is it?
Her letter reminded me that on any given Sunday, we are all in different places in our lives. Some up, some down, always moving, albeit not always in the direction of our hearts or our passions.
There are many reasons why we get stuck, or sidetracked. Some of the most common are: marriage and all the things that are associated with planning a wedding, the birth of a baby, or the surprise that you are having not one baby but twins; The death of a loved one that sends you reeling for months that roll into years; a child that falls off the grid and ends up in trouble, often stretching a family's financial resources; divorce; the discovery that a spouse has a substance abuse problem or that a member of the family is being abused; the realization that you have to move back home to take care of an ailing or aging parent, or finding out that you are challenged with a physical impairment of your own.
The difficulty with lifes challenges is that life goes on.... regardless of our circumstances, and what we are left with in order to create ORDER in our lives, is the need for a Plan. Because if you think you're out of control now, just start 2011 without Planning to Work and Working the Plan, and in 2 months, Dr. Phil will be asking, "So how's that workin' out for you?"
As this new year is only 5 days away, before you commit to fixing EVERYTHING that's wrong or not working in your life with a brand new shiny set of NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS in the month of January (a nearly impossible feat) I want you to try something new. I challenge you to tackle One (1) Important Thing in the first 30 days of 2011. I assure you, that by choosing to focus on just ONE thing every 30 days you will first [re] gain your FOCUS, experience the exhilaration of MOMENTUM. and set yourself up to ACHIEVE as a by-product of your concerted Effort!
In your already hectic life can you really; go back to college to get your degree, read to your children every single day, loose 30lbs, visit your mom in the nursing home 4 days a week, find 3 extra hours every day to study for the bar exam, get dinner on the table by 6PM; take over the responsibility for managing this years spring bakesale, get to church every Sunday, and make love to your significant other with vim and vigor? Really? Really? Probably not, but I'll bet that thinking about all of it makes you, "Want to Get Away" think Southwest Airlines.
Lest we forget that tackling just one thing on this list requires focus and all sorts of adjustments in our daily lives and routines to get IT done. Because when Superman doesn't show up to help us, what do we do? We give up and go back to the status quo; angry and frustrated that we couldn't do it ALL...in January.
There is ANOTHER option, and it's available to you in 30 Days at 100 Percent. It's the option to live your life at 100 percent by taking your power back 30 days at a time.
I leave you with one question. "How different would your life be in ONE year, if you changed ONE THING every 30 days?"
Sincerely,
Crystal Wright
